- We strongly recommend that you soften your ear wax with Earol spray, 2 squirts in each ear (optionally with the addition of 2 drops of glycerol), 4 times a day for at least 5 days prior to your appointment. If you want to use cotton wool to hold the oil in, first saturate the cotton wool in petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline), so the cotton wool doesn’t soak up all the Earol. Make sure you squirt the Earol over a sink until you see oil spray out in order to expel any air prior to application.

I was seen on time by Mary Levy who was very friendly and efficient. She explained the procedure to me as I had not had micro suction before and put me at my ease. Everything went according to plan and I would recommend Hearing First to anyone who has problems with build up of wax in their ears. It was such a relief to hear again properly.

I have had earwax removed at a number of places over the years but this was my first time at Sutton Coldfield. Beth Chapman was personable, considerate, professional and gave me some valuable practical advice about hearing problems. The treatment was carried out painlessly and very efficiently; I would highly recommend this practice. I am less enthusiastic about the online booking process, which I found a little cumbersome (it also told me I hadn’t completed a consent form, which was untrue) but if you want treatment at a competitive rate then it is worth your while to book online, otherwise the cost might be off-putting.

Anca very professionally and quickly suctioned a large amount of softened wax (I had used Earol) out of my left ear which had become completely blocked and suddenly I could hear out of it – in fact the world sounded so loud it took a minute or two for my brain to adjust. Then she turned to my right ear which I had referred to as my “good” ear, and expressed some surprise because it too was full of wax – but in this case an extremely hard wax plug. It must have been there for years with a small channel through to the ear drum which was opening and closing – explaining the random clicking sounds that I had been experiencing for the last couple of years. She worked away gently with little picks and forceps and after about 15 minutes teased out a rock hard plug about an inch long. It was quite an exhilarating experience to feel that that my ears were “breathing” for the first time in years. I have arranged for my wife to see Anca about the ear that she has recently become deaf in!
