Performing microsuction on an ear with a perforated ear drum is considered to be an aerosol generating procedure, as the middle ear is connected to the upper respiratory tract via the Eustachian tube.
During the current Covid-19 pandemic, aerosol generating procedures are an unacceptable risk to our practitioners and our other patients, as even asymptomatic people may have the Covid-19 virus in their upper respiratory tract, and therefore in their middle ear. We therefore regrettably cannot offer microsuction to anybody with a perforated ear drum.
We suggest the following options:
- Seek a referral from your GP to ENT, or
- Wait until the Covid-19 pandemic is over.
We are sorry that we cannot be more helpful at this time. If you would like to book an appointment once the Covid-19 pandemic is over, please register on our list for people with perforated ear drums here.
