Performing microsuction on an ear with a perforated ear drum is considered to be an aerosol generating procedure, as the middle ear is connected to the upper respiratory tract via the Eustachian tube.

During the current Covid-19 pandemic, aerosol generating procedures are an unacceptable risk to our practitioners and our other patients, as even asymptomatic people may have the Covid-19 virus in their upper respiratory tract, and therefore in their middle ear. We therefore regrettably cannot offer microsuction to anybody with a perforated ear drum, UNLESS their appointment is at least three weeks after they have received their second Covid vaccination.

If you have not had your second Covid vaccination, we suggest the following options:

  • Seek a referral from your GP to ENT, or
  • Wait until you have had your second Covid vaccination.

If you have not had your second Covid vaccination:

  • If it is at least 36 hours before your appointment, please go to Your Appointments and click “Cancel” next to the appointment. Then go to Your Orders and request a refund.
  • If it is less than 36 hours before your appointment, please call us on 0203 397 9787 and we will cancel your appointment and postpone it until at least 3 weeks after you have had your second Covid vaccination.
